Right & Wrong Reasons
to Adopt an Animal

The Wrong Reason
Because you're lonely...
The decision to adopt a pet shouldn't be based on your
immediate emotional needs.

The Right Reason
When you want a companion to share your life...
Pets are wonderful companions but adding one to your life means
making a long term commitment - be prepared!

The Wrong Reason
To teach a child to be responsible...
Taking care of a pet can be a lot of work
and it is unreasonable for an adult to expect a child to take on all of the
responsibilities - even tho the child insists they can...and will!

The Right Reason
When everyone in your household wants a pet...
All household members should be in favor of adopting and agree
to share in the responsibilities a pet brings.

The Wrong Reason
Because you feel sorry for an animal in a pet shop or pound...

Pity is a poor reason for getting a pet.  A pity-based decision is not
based on realistic expectations.

The Right Reason
When you understand what pet responsibility means...

Adopt an animal only after you have educated your self about animal
responsibility and the kind of pet that will fit your life style.

The Wrong Reason
Because you think your home needs a guard dog...

If you want something to guard your home, get an alarm system.
Reliable guard dogs require training!  They are often
not appropriate family pets.

The Right Reason
When you think of your pet as part of the family...

Companion animals should be given daily attention, care and basic
behavior training to make them welcome
in your home and in society.

The Wrong Reason
As a surprise gift...

Never buy an animal as a gift or surprise.  You may be surprised
that people are not prepared to deal with an unwanted pet at the time.

The Right Reason
When you know animals should not be disposable...

Animals bond deeply with those they love and should be treated as
family members, not as articles of clothing that can easily be exchanged
or returned.  If you want to give someone a pet as a gift, make sure
the recipient meets the animal and understands and agrees to the
responsibility of pet ownership.
